CNC Water Jet Cutting Machines utilize a Cross Beam Gantry with a Z-Axis Assembly mounted to it. The Z-Axis raises and lowers a cutting head between a cutting position and a non-cutting position (for loading and unloading material). A standard Z-Axis is motorized to raise and lower the cutting head between an upper and lower limit position: a cutting position and material loading/removal position. A Servoed Z-Axis uses servomotors that allows the Z-Axis to be variably positioned along its axis via the program controls. The variable programmed height allows you to raise the cutting head via the program for the cutting of uneven parts or the contoured cutting of parts.
When utilizing a High Rail Waterjet Cutting Machine for 5-Axis cutting, a single water only or abrasive cutting tool is the only option available. However, with 3-Axis High Rail Systems the limitations of a single Z Carriage is overcome with a precision machined Spreader Bar used for multiple cutting head configurations.
Spreader Bars
Precision machined Spreader Bars allow multiple tools, such as 3-Axis water only cutting heads, 3-Axis abrasive cutting heads, drills, rotary swivel cleaning manifolds, etc. to be mounted to the Z-Axis Assembly. Up to 12 tools can be mixed and positioned along the spreader bar to exact positions manually with a tape measure, manually using a digital readout, or from a CNC program when an automated system is specified. A Spreader Bar with multiple tools is usually deployed when a larger quantity of the identical part is being cut from a single sheet. The Edge X3 High Rail side and cross beam cutting envelope can be increased to accommodate large single sheets or multiple sheets with 12’ x 12’ being a common platform.
Many materials such as foam, rubber, and specialty materials such as those used for gaskets are water jet cut with water only. Composite materials, steel and specialty alloys require abrasive water jet cutting capabilities. The 3-axis waterjet and 3-Axis abrasivejet cutting tools can be combined on the spreader bar to eliminate set up time on material changeovers from water only to abrasive cutting, further enhancing productivity while expanding your product offering. Adding a pneumatic drill or rotary cleaning manifold allows secondary operations to also be performed on the water jet. Productivity, measured by cycle time per part, can be improved by a factor of twelve when a full spreader bar is deployed.
Other Considerations:
- Spreader Bars are available in lengths from 2 feet up to 12 feet and can accommodate up to 12 tools. The Z -Axis Assembly travel is factory set at 12 inches with options to increase the Z-Axis travel.
- A Standard Z-Axis is typically specified with Spreader Bars up to four feet and a Heavy Z-Axis is specified on Spreader Bars five feet and longer to accommodate the additional weight and spread.
- A Motorized Sub-Z Assembly mounted to the Spreader Bar allows each tool to be raised and lowered independently an additional 3 inches vertically so cutting heads not in use can be moved away from the cutting surface.
- Each cutting head has a manual shut off valve for the UHP water supply so heads not in use will not operate.
- Since many parts are cut from a single sheet during the cycle time, a Material Handling System may be incorporated that allows for the cut parts to be removed from the cutting surface and the next blank loaded while a second sheet is in the waterjet cutting envelope.
Case Studies
Several case studies illustrate the advantages of a Jet Edge High Rail utilizing a spreader bar with multiple cutting tools.

What Are High Rail Motion Systems?
CNC Water Jet Cutting Machines utilize a Cross Beam Gantry with a Z Carriage mounted to it. The Z Carriage travel height establishes the Z plane of the cutting envelope.
The cross beam travels along two side rails to define the X and Y planes of the cutting envelope. The height of the cross beam the cutting head is mounted to classifies them as Mid Rail or High Rail Waterjet Systems. While Mid Rail Motion Systems have evolved into the industry standard and are now more common in facilities where water jet cutting is done, high rail cutting technology led the way into industrial production.
High Rail Motion Systems utilize taller legs to suspend the side rails, raising the Cross Beam Gantry up out of the cutting zone. This provides better protection for the drive systems and increases the size of the work envelope available for production material. Additional productivity advantages are inherent with this layout including increasing the Z Carriage Travel, utilizing a Spreader Bar to mount multiple cutting heads when only 3-Axis cutting is required, cutting materials that are larger than the tables work surface, the ease of incorporating different types of material handling systems like conveyors, shuttle tables, pick and place robotics, overhead cranes, etc. for loading and unloading.
